The Great Native societies of the southeastern tribes (prior to the European invasion) were matriarchal societies.  Women held high economic, social, and political status.  They were agricultural people.  The women worked cooperatively for the good of the people.

Women farmed and controlled the crops that their work produced, so they were often the ones who conducted trading.  The bounty from planting and harvesting food was rewarding and was theirs to use as they saw fit.  Women had ownership rights.  They owned the properties, houses, and lineage.
It was a Creek woman, Chief Chofitachequi, who greeted De Soto and his army in 1540.  It was the Europeans who arrived later and ruled the colonies who refused to accept our women as leaders/chiefs.  In the past few decades, several tribes have elected women as leaders/chiefs and have made great progress under their leadership.  I believe it's time for our tribe to make leadership matriarchal again by electing a woman for chief.
